AIID camera search finds a missing man in Anyang in three hours

Anyang police used the AIID camera system to narrow the search for a missing man and found him within three hours of the report. They estimate that a manual search could have taken more than 10 hours.

  • 3 for a person

A man who had switched off his phone and sent a message that suggested suicide was found within three hours. The police and the paper describe the rescue as timely, and no source says what harm would otherwise have followed.

  • 1 for an organization

The police say that a manual search could have taken more than 10 hours and that AIID narrowed the area for the ten officers who searched. The 10-hour figure is an estimate.

Depth runs from 1, a convenience or time saved, to 5, a life or a livelihood preserved.

Compared with

A manual search of the camera footage by officers. Assumed without a measurement.

The system’s part
Not isolated. The Seoul Economic Daily and the Korea Herald credit AIID with showing where the man was last seen, and the police team says that its fast route tracking allowed the rescue in time. No source compares the search with and without the system, and the 10-hour figure is a police estimate. Officers still confirmed matches by eye, and the reports do not say how AIID was trained.
Later
Persisted, 20 October 2025. Anyang City said that police used AIID again on 3 October 2025 and found an 88-year-old with dementia about three hours after the search began.

AI system

Workflow

Officers entered a photo of the missing man and a description of his clothing into AIID and limited the search area to his neighborhood. AIID picked look-alike people from public camera footage and linked the cameras into a movement graph to narrow where the man had disappeared. Ten officers searched the area that AIID had narrowed down.

Follow-up

Conditions for replication

Public cameras cover the area where the person was last seen. Officers confirm each AIID match by eye, because the system only narrows the group of people to check. Other police units supply officers to search the narrowed area.

Purpose

Anyang City, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology and the Korean National Police Agency built AIID to find missing people by searching public camera footage and predicting where they went.
