What happened
Latin NCAP, the consumer car-safety program for Latin America and the Caribbean, tested the Hyundai Tucson with six airbags in 2025, for cars built from 5 April 2024. The car's Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, listed as FCA Ped/Cyc, brakes automatically for pedestrians and cyclists from 5 to 85 km/h. It scored 100% in each pedestrian scenario: an adult running from the far side, an adult walking from the near side and an obscured child running out. Latin NCAP awarded 12.00 points, a full score, and writes that the system meets its technical and availability requirements. The car-to-car system, FCA-Car, avoided a slower car at up to 65 km/h and scored 7.40 points for interurban braking. City braking took the full 3 points. The Tucson earned five stars, with 75% for vulnerable road users. Latin NCAP lists pedestrian AEB as optional on the Tucson range, and the tested car had it fitted. Hyundai Motor Group writes that FCA works from the forward-facing camera and that its detection is machine learning-based. The results come from track tests with dummies, with no crash data.

The technology for detection is machine learning-based, and now with enough iterations, the system is one of the world's best in both recognition capabilities and response time.

AI system
- Workflow
-
Latin NCAP ran its pedestrian AEB scenarios on a Tucson with FCA Ped/Cyc fitted, within the system's 5 to 85 km/h range. The system scored 100% in each pedestrian scenario and 100% for human-machine interaction.
Follow-up
- Conditions for replication
-
The car has the optional pedestrian AEB fitted. The pedestrian or cyclist crosses or walks in the car's path as in the test scenarios.
