What happened
The U.S. Postal Service applies machine learning and computer vision to shipping labels to identify counterfeit postage and the accounts and transactions behind it. One application validates images of labels and barcodes to confirm that postage was paid. The Postal Service's Office of Inspector General described these uses in a research white paper dated 3 August 2026. Its Research and Insights Solution Center drew on desk research of more than 100 sources and more than 20 interviews, including USPS leaders and subject matter experts. The paper reports that 1,250 accounts generating counterfeit labels had been closed since January 2026 as the result of AI-driven detection. It adds that USPS uses multiple AI tools and platforms for counterfeit labels and is expanding their use, while the image-based validation application was still being tested. The Inspector General does not say that it re-performed the count, names no vendor and gives no comparison with detection before the AI tools. The work followed the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency's standards for inspection and evaluation, and management reviewed the observations on 7 July 2026.

- Workflow
-
USPS applied machine learning and computer vision to images of shipping labels and barcodes to confirm that postage was paid. USPS closed the accounts that generated counterfeit labels after the AI tools detected them.
Follow-up
- Conditions for replication
-
Label and barcode images must be captured during processing so that the models can validate them. Staff must act on detections by closing the accounts.
