What happened
EIDU supplies a learning app on low-cost Android devices to pre-primary classrooms in Kenya. The app picks literacy and numeracy exercises according to each learner's history and carries digitized lesson plans from the Tayari structured pedagogy program. EdTech Hub researchers ran a randomized trial in 291 pre-primary schools in Murang'a County from October 2022 to October 2023, with 1,995 learners. Treatment schools received the app, the lesson plans and teacher training. Control schools kept teaching the non-digitized curriculum. EdTech Hub reports that EIDU's classroom-integrated tool raised learning, measured with the IDELA assessment, by 0.534 standard deviations. The researchers credit close alignment with the curriculum and classroom practice. EdTech Hub ran the research in collaboration with EIDU, and donors including the Gates Foundation supported it through EIDU. Because the trial tested the app together with structured pedagogy, the app's own share is unknown.

The findings indicate that EIDU's classroom-integrated DPL tool had a statistically significant effect on overall learning (0.534 SD, p < 0.001).

- Workflow
-
Each classroom received low-cost Android devices with the EIDU app, shared among learners during the school day. Teachers received training on the Tayari program and its digitized lesson plans, with support from county early childhood development officers. The exercises were mapped to Kenya's competency-based curriculum and approved by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development.

-
Digital content must align with the national curriculum and with what teachers teach that day. County governments must pay at least part of the cost of the devices.
