Forward Collision Mitigation on the Triton passes all car-to-car tests

ANCAP's rating of the new Mitsubishi Triton, published on 12 April 2024, found that its braking avoided or mitigated collisions in all car-to-car tests. It scored 3.69 of 4 for them.

  • Not rated a person

Drivers and passengers stand to gain, but ANCAP reports track tests and no crash outcomes.

  • Not rated society

People in other vehicles stand to gain, but ANCAP reports track tests and no crash outcomes.

Depth runs from 1, a convenience or time saved, to 5, a life or a livelihood preserved.

Two independent assessment reports support the benefit.

The system’s part
Not isolated. ANCAP tested the Triton with its systems on and ran no test without them, so the scores describe the systems on the track. ANCAP names the system Forward Collision Mitigation and reports which road users it detects. It does not describe the sensors or how the system recognizes vehicles, and neither ANCAP document shows that the detection learns from data.

ANCAP. Safety rating technical report, Mitsubishi Triton (February 2024 onwards, all variants). Rating published 12 April 2024, section Safety Assist.

Tests of the AEB (Car-to-Car) system showed GOOD performance with collisions avoided or mitigated in all test scenarios, including in AEB Junction Assist scenarios where the test vehicle can autonomously brake to avoid crashes when turning across the path of an oncoming vehicle.
  2. Assessment report, by authors with no tie to the system.

ANCAP. Mitsubishi Triton lines up as next dual cab to offer five-star safety. Media release, 12 April 2024.

The Triton is fitted with an autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system capable of detecting and responding to other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists in a mix of scenarios, however the Triton’s functionality does not extend to the more sophisticated AEB scenarios such as avoidance in T-bone intersection crashes and head-on crashes.

Workflow

Autonomous emergency braking for cars, vulnerable road users and junctions was standard on the Triton. The car-to-car braking works from 10 to 130 km/h.

Follow-up

Conditions for replication

The other vehicle is ahead in the same lane or oncoming while the Triton turns, since the system does not react in crossing or head-on scenarios. The rating applies to all Triton variants from February 2024.

Entry details

Sector

Road vehicle crash avoidance.

Purpose

Mitsubishi Motors built Forward Collision Mitigation to warn the driver and brake automatically when a collision with a vehicle, pedestrian, cyclist or motorcyclist is likely.
