What happened
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is an independent nonprofit funded by auto insurers. On 21 February 2019, it published its first ratings of automatic braking for pedestrians, for 11 small SUVs. It tested the 2018-19 Honda CR-V with Honda Sensing, which is standard on the EX and higher trims. IIHS ran three track scenarios: a child running out from behind parked cars, an adult crossing and an adult walking along the road. The CR-V avoided the crossing adult at 12 and 25 mph and the walking adult at 25 mph. In the 37 mph walking test, it warned 2.2 seconds before impact and cut its impact speed by 32 mph. Only the CR-V and Forester earned credit for a timely warning in that test. Its braking cut the child's impact speed by 10 mph at 12 mph and by 22 mph at 25 mph. IIHS rated the CR-V superior. Honda reports that 81% of the CR-Vs sold in the United States in 2018 had Honda Sensing. No crash avoided on public roads is reported.

Honda Sensing was standard on the EX, EX-L and Touring trims of the 2018-19 CR-V. IIHS scored the average speed reduction over five runs of each test on dry pavement. The crossing tests ran at 12 and 25 mph and the walking-adult test at 25 and 37 mph. IIHS credited warnings given at least 2.1 seconds before impact in the 37 mph walking-adult test.
Follow-up
