What happened
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is an independent nonprofit funded by auto insurers. On 8 October 2026, it published its first front crash prevention ratings for commercial vehicles, seven cargo vans and four Class 3 pickups. It used the same protocols as for passenger vehicles. The 2025 Rivian RCV-Delivery 500 has Driver+ as standard. By day it avoided a crossing child dummy at 12 mph and cut its impact speed by 16 mph at 25 mph. At night it avoided the adult dummy in seven of eight tests with low and high beams. In the eighth, at 37 mph with high beams, it slowed by 36 mph. IIHS rated it good, as it did the Chevrolet BrightDrop 400. In the vehicle-to-vehicle test the van avoided the car target at 31 and 37 mph. It did not slow or warn for the motorcycle target in any run. IIHS rated its vehicle-to-vehicle braking marginal. The tests ran on a track, so no crash avoided on public roads is reported.

AI system
- Workflow
-
Driver+ was standard on the 2025 RCV-Delivery 500. IIHS used the same test protocols and rating requirements as for passenger vehicles. The pedestrian score included credit for high-beam assist.
Follow-up
- Conditions for replication
-
The pedestrian crosses the road or walks in the van's lane, as in the tested scenarios. The hazard is a pedestrian or a car, since the system did not slow or warn for the motorcycle target.
