What happened
The China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC) rates assisted driving in C-ICAP, its own program. The C-ICAP rules, version 1.1, state that CATARC's Management Center "shall independently acquire the vehicle according to the random principle." CATARC's own yearly budget pays for buying the cars and for the tests. On 23 September 2024 CATARC published its results for an XPeng X9 702 Max with assisted driving software XOS 5.0.5. The car scored 100.0% for car following, combined control and emergency avoidance. It scored 91.6% for driver interaction and 85.3% for navigation-guided driving assistance. CATARC's rating report notes that the car has no minimal risk maneuver for a driver who does not take over. In the navigation tests it sometimes braked too hard and could not identify unusual objects on the road. Its success rate in traffic was relatively low. CATARC scores some simulated scenarios from reports that the carmaker supplies. The tests ran on a closed track and on highway and expressway routes. No outcome in everyday driving is reported.

XOS 5.0.5 (software version tested)
- Workflow
-
CATARC acquired the car itself and chose the configuration with the highest level of intelligence after asking the carmaker for technical information. The car ran XOS 5.0.5 with a 508 TOPS chip, 10 cameras, 3 millimeter-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic radars and 2 lidars.
Follow-up
- Conditions for replication
-
The driver responds to takeover warnings, since CATARC's rating report notes that the car has no minimal risk maneuver. The driver watches for unusual objects on the road, which the car could not identify in the navigation tests. The result applies only to the tested sample, software version and test environment.

Road vehicle crash avoidance / assisted driving.
- Purpose
-
XPeng built the assisted driving in XOS 5.0.5 to help the driver control speed, following distance and steering and to follow a navigation route on highways.
