What happened
ANCAP, the Australasian New Car Assessment Program, published its rating of the new 250 Series Toyota Prado on 13 December 2024. ANCAP reports that the Prado's automatic emergency braking can detect and react to pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. The system, Toyota Safety Sense, avoided or mitigated collisions in all cyclist tests, including turning scenarios. It scored 8.57 of 9 for cyclists. It avoided or mitigated collisions in most pedestrian tests and scored 6.20 of 7. It scored 6.00 of 6 for braking and 3.00 of 3 for lane support with motorcycles. Reverse braking for pedestrians is not on at the start of a journey, so ANCAP did not test or score it. The Prado scored 84% for vulnerable road user protection and earned five stars. These were track tests, and no crash avoided on public roads is reported. ANCAP does not describe how the system detects road users.
