What happened
Euro NCAP, the European New Car Assessment Programme, published its assisted driving grading for the Renault 5 on 4 June 2025. It tested Active Driver Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with lane guidance. The system reads speed limits from maps and real time camera inputs and adapts to some road features such as curves and roundabouts. The car avoided or mitigated a collision in almost all of the automatic cruise control scenarios. Through an S-bend, it stayed in its lane at all but the highest test speed. With an unresponsive driver, it made a controlled stop in its lane. Euro NCAP scored the system 92% for safety backup and 73% for assistance competence and graded it Very Good. It noted that the driver monitoring system detects fatigue and does not detect distraction. The car also does not lock out the system after repeated hands-off warnings. No crash outcome on public roads is reported. Euro NCAP does not mention machine learning.

- Workflow
-
The system combined map-based speed limit information with real time camera inputs. It adapted its speed to some road features such as curves and roundabouts. Its driver monitoring system detected fatigue.
Follow-up
- Conditions for replication
-
The driver stays attentive, since the driver monitoring does not detect distraction. The driver keeps hands on the wheel, since the car does not lock out the system after repeated warnings.
