What happened
Euro NCAP, the European New Car Assessment Programme, published its assisted driving grading for the Volkswagen ID.5 in May 2022. It tested Travel Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with lane guidance. The system reads speed limits from maps and live camera input and slows for curves and junctions. In the cruise control tests the ID.5 avoided a collision in most scenarios. It needed automatic emergency braking in the stopped vehicle, cut-in and cut-out tests. The car stayed in its lane through an S-bend at all test speeds and stopped in its lane for an unresponsive driver. Euro NCAP gave it 76% for assistance competence and 85% for safety backup and graded it Very Good. It noted that the ID.5 has no driver camera and monitors only steering input. No outcome on public roads is reported, and Euro NCAP does not describe machine learning.

Assessment report, by authors with no tie to the system.
The VW ID.5 provides very good Vehicle Assistance with a similar level of Driver Engagement. Combined with excellent safety back-up, the system, overall, offers Very Good highway assistance.
Details
AI system
- Workflow
-
Map-based speed limits were combined with live camera input. The system balanced the driver's steering with lane guidance. A blocked radar or camera triggered a warning and kept the system from engaging.
Follow-up
- Conditions for replication
-
The driver must keep hands on the wheel, since the system monitors only steering input. The radar and camera must be unobstructed for the system to engage.

Road vehicle crash avoidance.
- Purpose
-
Volkswagen built Travel Assist to control speed and steering while the driver supervises.
