What happened
UNDP's Liberian Electoral Support Project helped the National Elections Commission prepare for the 2023 elections. With the European Commission-UNDP Joint Task Force on Electoral Assistance, it gave the civil society group Local Voices Liberia a grant of USD 45,360 to run iVerify fact-checking. A digital application from a separate Peacebuilding Fund project used artificial intelligence and an algorithm to automate the capture of hate speech on radio. The application was integrated with the iVerify platform. An evaluator commissioned by UNDP Liberia reported on 9 April 2025, after fieldwork from December 2024 to February 2025. The evaluator found that the application expanded the scope of the monitoring and the type of information collected. Interviewees called iVerify an effective and trusted tool. Local Voices Liberia found 219 instances of disinformation during the electoral period, 51 of them about the electoral process. The evaluator does not say how many came from radio or from the application. The evaluator cites the Peacebuilding Fund project's own 2024 progress report for the application.
