What happened
Latin NCAP, the consumer car-safety program for Latin America and the Caribbean, tested the Ford Ranger pickup with seven airbags in 2024, a truck built in Argentina. Its automatic emergency braking, named Pre-Collision Assist on the result page, warns the driver and brakes for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists ahead. It scored 100% in each pedestrian scenario: an adult running from the far side, an adult walking from the near side and an obscured child running out. Latin NCAP awarded 12.00 points, a full score, and writes that the system showed good performance and meets its availability requirements. Pre-Collision Assist avoided a slower car at up to 65 km/h and scored 8.57 points for interurban braking. City braking took the full 3 points. The Ranger earned five stars, with 75% for vulnerable road users and 92% for safety assist. Ford wrote in 2020 that Mobileye's EyeQ chips and vision software would support Pre-Collision Assist across its global lineup. The results come from track tests with dummies, with no crash data.

Latin NCAP ran its pedestrian AEB scenarios on a Ranger with pedestrian AEB fitted. The system scored 100% in each pedestrian scenario and 100% for human-machine interaction.
Follow-up
- Conditions for replication
-
The truck has the optional pedestrian AEB fitted. The pedestrian or cyclist crosses or walks in the truck's path as in the test scenarios.
