What happened
The Tourist Police Bureau of the Royal Thai Police deployed AI-powered surveillance cameras at tourist hot spots from July 2024. The cameras are linked to central databases of warrants and criminal records, so that people with outstanding charges or considered high-risk are identified in real time. The Bangkok Post reported on 25 May 2025 that the bureau's commander had said that the system had led to the arrest of 180 suspects. The arrests were in Pattaya (102), Chiang Mai (54), Nakhon Ratchasima (21) and at Suvarnabhumi Airport (3), for offenses including theft, assault and attempted murder. The system also monitors around 600 people flagged for suspicious activity, with alerts when they enter monitored zones. The bureau planned to extend the cameras to all major tourist areas. The figures are the bureau's own, as given by its commander. The article does not say how arrests were attributed to the cameras, and it does not describe the matching technique. No outside body audited the count.
