What happened
The Secretaria de Segurança Pública do Piauí runs the Sistema de Policiamento por Inteligência Artificial (SPIA), a network of monitoring cameras in Teresina that tracks vehicles automatically. On 10 March 2026 a car was stolen at about 14:00. After the theft was registered, the car was entered into the system's monitoring network. That afternoon the system detected the car at a junction of two avenues in the south of the city, and minutes later at another point, with a new location alert. Operators passed the alerts in real time to police teams, who set up an interception. Two men were arrested in the act and the car was recovered. g1 Piauí, a Globo regional news site, reported the operation on 11 March 2026 from the secretariat's account, and the secretariat published its own account on 12 March 2026. Neither document describes how the system recognizes vehicles, and no outside body checked the account.
