AI-vision robot ends barrel-unloading accidents at Midleton

EU-OSHA's award case study relays that Midleton Distillery's autonomous mobile robot with AI vision brought a 100 % reduction in accidents in barrel unloading, with none reported since.

  • 3 for a person

Operators no longer handle 60 kg barrels inside containers, and the company reports no barrel-handling accidents since the robot started, so the task's injury risk is removed for them.

  • 2 for an organization

The distillery reports zero accidents in the process and estimates savings of EUR 1.38 million a year from unloading three-high stacks.

Depth runs from 1, a convenience or time saved, to 5, a life or a livelihood preserved.

Compared with

Manual unloading by two operators under the earlier organizational controls. Measured.

The system’s part
Not isolated. The case study attributes the accident reduction to the robot taking over manual unloading. The AI vision system guides the robot, but the document does not assess its contribution separately. The accident figures come from the company without a baseline count.

Details

AI system

Workflow

A joint team of Pilz consultants, distillery engineers, safety staff and operators designed the robot over three years. The robot unloads barrels stacked three high while operators supervise from a secure area.

Follow-up

Conditions for replication

Safety circuits, light curtains and floor scanners must stop the robot when a person enters its zone. Operators must stay in command of the process and intervene only under the safety protocols.

Workplace safety.

Purpose

Pilz and Midleton Distillery built the autonomous mobile robot to unload stacked barrels from shipping containers so that operators no longer handle 60 kg barrels by hand.
