What happened
Nigeria's Fiscal Governance and Institutions Project, financed by a World Bank credit, ran from June 2018 to 30 June 2025. Its statistics component, implemented by the National Bureau of Statistics, included a performance-based condition for generated and validated statistical datasets. At the May 2018 baseline, the bureau used no artificial intelligence methods for food price data collection. The target required that alternative methods of food price data collection using artificial intelligence and crowdsourcing are used by the bureau. The World Bank's Independent Evaluation Group reviewed the completion report on 28 May 2026 and recorded all targets as achieved, with all 15 intermediate results indicators met. The evaluators list the AI-based food price data collection system among the outputs that project financing enabled. The Bank's own completion report of 24 December 2025 describes a framework for using artificial intelligence and crowdsourcing as an alternative data source. It also describes a public real-time dashboard, updated at least twice weekly, covering 180 markets in 6 states. Neither document describes the artificial intelligence method or compares the new data with the bureau's survey-based prices.

AI system
- Workflow
-
A performance-based condition of the project required the bureau to use artificial intelligence and crowdsourcing for food price data. Project financing paid for survey methodology, data quality monitoring and other consultancies for the bureau.
Follow-up
- Conditions for replication
-
Market price data must keep flowing from crowdsourcing contributors in the covered markets. The bureau must keep updating the dashboard after project financing ends.

- Purpose
-
An unnamed developer built the AI-based food price data collection system for the National Bureau of Statistics to gather food prices from markets through artificial intelligence and crowdsourcing.
