Paraná court upholds 10 police forest cases begun by MapBiomas Alerta

Paraná's Court of Justice upheld police enforcement in 10 decisions from 2023 to 2026 on Atlantic Forest clearing flagged by MapBiomas alerts, three by reversing acquittals.

The system’s part
Not isolated. The decisions do not describe how the alerts are made, and none compares enforcement with and without them. Officers checked each alert by satellite comparison, drone or site visit before they acted, and no court tested the alerts' accuracy. MapBiomas states that analysts validate each alert on Planet images and that a supervised Random Forest classifier refines its outline.

MapBiomas alerts reached the police as complaints, often during Operação Mata Atlântica em Pé with state prosecutors. Teams checked each alert by satellite comparison, drone overflight or a site visit and measured the area with GPS. The police filed infraction notices, police reports and georeferencing records, and prosecutors brought charges or civil actions.

Follow-up

Conditions for replication

Officers must confirm each alert in the field or by overflight, since field areas often differ from the alert. The police must identify the person responsible for the land. Courts must accept police records and testimony when no forensic exam was made.
