What happened
Consumer Reports (CR) is an independent nonprofit that tests products. On 17 October 2023, it updated its ratings of active driving assistance systems, which combine adaptive cruise control with lane centering. CR rated 17 systems in 40 tests on its track in Connecticut and on public roads, in 2022 and 2023. It tested Highway Driving Assist 2, used by Hyundai, Kia and Genesis, on a Hyundai Ioniq 6. The system scored 59, 12 points more than the original Highway Driving Assist. CR found that the gain came mainly from lane centering that keeps the car near the center of the lane. The original system had let the car ping-pong between the lane lines. Highway Driving Assist 2 ranked 11th of 17, and the original ranked last. CR also found that the new system allowed 2 minutes and 15 seconds hands-free before the first audible warning. For an unresponsive driver, it stops steering and holds the car at 40 mph. CR reports no crash outcomes.

Mike Monticello, Consumer Reports. Ford's BlueCruise Remains CR's Top-Rated Active Driving Assistance System. Updated 17 October 2023, introduction.
Our testers saw significant improvements with Hyundai's Highway Driving Assist 2, which scored 12 points higher than the original system. This is mainly because the updated version's LCA system does a much better job of keeping the vehicle near the center of the lane, rather than allowing it to ping-pong back and forth between the lane lines.

AI system
- Workflow
-
Adaptive cruise control and lane centering controlled speed and steering together. CR scored each system in 40 tests on its track and on public roads. Separate steering-wheel controls let the driver switch on the cruise control and the lane centering independently.
Follow-up
- Conditions for replication
-
The driver keeps hands on the wheel and eyes on the road, since the system allowed more than two minutes hands-free before a warning. The driver stays responsive, since the system stops steering and keeps the car at 40 mph when it finds the driver unresponsive.
