What happened
Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) runs the Japan New Car Assessment Program (JNCAP) with the National Agency for Automotive Safety and Victims' Aid (NASVA). On 27 May 2020, MLIT published the fiscal 2019 results. Sixteen vehicles took the preventive safety assessment, scored out of 141 points. That year JNCAP added braking for pedestrians at night without street lights. The Nissan Serena, rated together with the Suzuki Landy, scored full marks. It was one of four vehicles to do so, and each won the grand prize for beating the previous highest score. MLIT's score sheet gives the Serena 15.0 of 15 for pedestrians at night without street lights and 40.0 of 40 with them. Nissan writes that the Serena's Intelligent Emergency Braking has improved detection of pedestrians at night. MLIT warns that these devices assist the driver and may not work fully in some weather, surroundings or road conditions. No crash avoided on public roads is reported.
