What happened
Testaankoop, the Belgian consumer organization, published a test of translator earbuds on 8 March 2026. It tested two cheap models bought on Amazon, two premium models and ordinary earbuds with translation features. The premium models were the Vasco Translator E1 at €399 and the Timekettle M3 at €150. Such earbuds do not translate by themselves. A paired smartphone app does the work, usually over the internet. Testaankoop found that the Vasco worked as soon as it was paired with the Vasco Connect app. It found that the Vasco translated more consistently and accurately than the Timekettle in all the languages tested, with a somewhat less artificial voice. It judged that the Vasco gave the most convincing result for translation and ease of use. The article gives no error counts and does not list the languages tested. Testaankoop concludes that translator earbuds do not yet replace a human interpreter. It adds that it is not always clear how far makers use advanced AI.

At the heart of our language translator earbuds is a stack of AI doing a lot of heavy lifting. Vasco live speech translation device taps into AI-powered servers running machine learning models, and the whole system draws on over 10 different translation engines under the hood.
Details
AI system
- Workflow
-
Translation ran in the paired Vasco Connect app, usually over an internet connection. An automatic conversation mode started translating without a tap.
Follow-up
- Conditions for replication
-
The phone has an internet connection, which translation usually requires. Speakers talk clearly and take turns, since Testaankoop found that translation quickly goes wrong when people interrupt each other.
