What happened
ANCAP is the independent new car assessment program for Australia and New Zealand. On 7 November 2024, it rated the GWM Cannon Alpha at five stars, the first hybrid ute that it had tested. The Cannon Alpha has Auto Emergency Assist, automatic emergency braking with forward collision warning, as standard. Lane Assist with emergency lane keeping is also standard. ANCAP tested a 2.0-litre hybrid. Its report states that the braking can detect and react to pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. The braking and lane support earned full points in the motorcyclist tests, 6.00 of 6 and 3.00 of 3, including turning and overtaking scenarios. The braking avoided or lessened collisions with cars in all car-to-car scenarios. It scored 5.90 of 7 for pedestrians ahead and 8.43 of 9 for cyclists. Its braking for pedestrians behind the reversing car was marginal. It did not lessen a crash when an oncoming car moved into its path. The tests ran on a track, so no crash avoided on public roads is reported.

ANCAP. GWM Cannon Alpha becomes first hybrid ute tested and rated by ANCAP. Media release, 7 November 2024.
The Cannon Alpha's active collision avoidance capability - which assists in minimising the risk of collision with either a pedestrian, cyclist, motorcyclist or other vehicle - also scored well.

AI system
- Workflow
-
Auto Emergency Assist works from 5 to 80 km/h for pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists and from 5 to 150 km/h for cars. Lane Assist with emergency lane keeping works from 60 to 150 km/h. ANCAP tested a right-hand-drive 2.0-litre hybrid Ultra.
Follow-up
- Conditions for replication
-
Speeds fall within the systems' operating ranges. The hazard is ahead of the vehicle, since braking for pedestrians behind the reversing car was marginal.
