What happened
Shenzhen Yiwei Medical Technology built DrBrain-AD, software that uses deep learning to analyze T1-weighted brain MR images. It helps doctors assess abnormalities of the hippocampus in patients aged 55 to 70, as imaging support for a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. The Center for Medical Device Evaluation (CMDE) of China's National Medical Products Administration reviewed the company's application for Class III registration. The trial was the maker's own and enrolled 514 patients at three hospitals in China, among them Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University. The software alone reached a sensitivity of 0.9328 (0.9020 to 0.9637) and a specificity of 0.9042 (0.8685 to 0.9399). The lower bounds exceeded the targets of 85% and 80%. Doctors reading with the software reached a sensitivity of 0.9328 and a specificity of 0.8736. The report gives no figures for doctors reading alone and does not name the reference standard. On 14 September 2023, CMDE concluded that “该产品上市带来的受益大于风险” (the benefits of putting the product on the market outweigh the risks) and recommended approval.

Patients are aged 55 to 70. Radiologists review the images again. Clinicians also weigh the history, symptoms and other tests before they judge whether a patient has Alzheimer's disease.
