What happened
Shanghai United Imaging Intelligence built uAI-PulmonaryEmbolism, software that uses deep learning on pulmonary CT angiography to flag adults with suspected acute pulmonary embolism for triage. The Center for Medical Device Evaluation (CMDE) of China's National Medical Products Administration reviewed the company's application for Class III registration. The trial was the maker's own, a retrospective, multicenter, single-arm study of 496 cases at three institutions. An expert panel's reading served as the reference. Sensitivity was 95.09% (95% CI 91.42% to 97.24%) and specificity 88.24% (95% CI 83.86% to 91.54%). Both lower bounds exceeded the targets of 80% (p<0.001), and no device defect occurred. On 13 September 2024, CMDE concluded that “该产品上市带来的受益大于风险” (the benefits of putting the product on the market outweigh the risks) and recommended approval. The report lists the software's processing time as a secondary endpoint and gives no result for it. The trial used stored images, so the prompts guided no care. It did not compare doctors' diagnoses with and without the software.
