What happened
Hangzhou Deepwise built Dr.Wise-AADS, deep learning software that segments head and neck vessels and helps detect intracranial aneurysms of 3 mm or more on CT angiograms. The Center for Medical Device Evaluation (CMDE) of China's National Medical Products Administration reviewed the company's application for Class III registration. The trial was the maker's own, a retrospective, randomized crossover, self-controlled study of 965 cases at four institutions. Imaging experts' readings served as the reference. With the software, lesion-level sensitivity rose by 10.85% (95% CI 7.77% to 13.94%) and patient-level sensitivity by 8.55%. Patient-level specificity fell by 2.96%, within the non-inferiority margin of -10%. On 26 February 2024, CMDE concluded that “该产品上市带来的受益大于风险” (putting the product on the market brings benefits that outweigh the risks). It recommended approval. In a notice dated 1 March 2024, NMPA announced that it had approved the product as an innovative device. The doctors read stored images, so the software guided no care.

- Reported configuration
-
Release 1 (full version 1.1.0.1)
- Workflow
-
The software segmented the head and neck vessels with deep learning and flagged suspected aneurysms. Doctors read the CT angiograms with the software's marks and vessel reconstructions as aids.
Follow-up
- Conditions for replication
-
Images are head and neck CT angiograms, and aneurysms are 3 mm or larger. Trained doctors read the images and do not base a clinical decision on the software alone.
