Testers find Persona age estimates within 2 years for ages 11 to 20

In Australia's government-commissioned trial, Persona's facial age estimation had a mean absolute error of less than 2 years for ages 11 to 20. Testers rated this good for commercial systems.

  • Not rated a person

The trial measured the accuracy of estimates in lab and school tests, and no outcome for children or other users in routine use is reported.

Depth runs from 1, a convenience or time saved, to 5, a life or a livelihood preserved.

Compared with

Human accuracy at judging whether a person is above an age threshold, as the testers cite it. Assumed without a measurement.

Without the system
approximately 60-70%
With it
False negative rates between 25%-36% for 18–20-year-olds at the 18+ gate, which the testers call similar to human accuracy
The system’s part
Not isolated. The testers compared the system's own estimates with true ages, so the figures concern the system itself. There was no comparison of age checks with and without it. Persona's practice statement in the test report says that its selfie-based estimation uses AI models trained with ethically sourced data. The Trial's age estimation report lists Persona among the providers that use trained facial analysis models.

AI system

Workflow

The testers sent face images to Persona's system and compared each estimated age with the subject's true age. They checked the results at 13+, 16+ and 18+ age gates, in the lab and in schools.

Follow-up

Conditions for replication

A buffer of at least 2 to 3 years above the gate age is needed for reliable age gating. Users close to an age gate need a further age verification step.

Sector

Online safety (age assurance).

Purpose

Persona built its age estimation to estimate a person's age from a single selfie for age checks.
