What happened
On 18 February 2025 the Kinki District Transport Bureau of Japan's transport ministry made its region's first Level 4 approval. It covers a bus for Expo 2025 visitors using the Maishima park-and-ride in Osaka. Osaka Metro applied for the approval and runs the bus. The bureau confirmed that the bus's automated operation device met the safety standards and approved it as an automated vehicle that needs no driver. The vehicle is an EV Motors Japan F8 series2-City Bus 10.5m on a route of about 2.5 km in and around the parking lot, at up to 35 km/h. The bureau states that the bus finds its own position with sensors and drives itself while detecting vehicles and pedestrians. Jidounten Lab reported that the bus carries Advanced Smart Mobility's ASM-AD system, with cameras and LiDAR. It added that magnetic markers, painted target lines, smart poles and links to traffic signals support the system. The release gives no test results and does not say whether the device uses machine learning.
