What happened
Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) runs the Japan New Car Assessment Program (JNCAP) with the National Agency for Automotive Safety and Victims' Aid (NASVA). On 24 October 2019, MLIT published preventive safety results for the first half of fiscal 2019, covering five vehicles. Because many pedestrian crashes happen at night, JNCAP extended its night test of braking for pedestrians to darker roads without street lighting. MLIT reports that the Lexus UX, like the NX, also handled the unlit condition. It scored full marks, 141 of 141 points. Lexus writes that the UX carries the latest Lexus Safety System +, which recognizes pedestrians at night. Toshiba, which supplied the image processor in DENSO's front camera, credits its processing of luminance differences for better detection of pedestrians at night. MLIT warns that these devices assist the driver and may not work fully in some weather, surroundings or road conditions. No crash avoided on public roads is reported.

Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation. Toyota Lexus UX and Lexus NX with Toshiba's Image Recognition Processor Win Highest Score in Japan's Assessment of Preventive Safety Performance. News release, 26 November 2019, archived copy. Toshiba supplies its Visconti 4 image recognition processor for DENSO's front camera in these Toyota vehicles.
The LSI's ability to process luminance differences between objects and their backgrounds, realizing better detection of pedestrians at night and in low light conditions, helped the Toyota vehicles win high scores in the assessment.
