What happened
Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) runs the Japan New Car Assessment Program (JNCAP) with the National Agency for Automotive Safety and Victims' Aid (NASVA). On 30 May 2019, MLIT published the preventive safety results for fiscal 2018, covering 21 vehicles. Because many pedestrian crashes happen at night, JNCAP had added a test of braking for pedestrians at night under street lighting. It also added acceleration suppression for pedal errors, against the sudden-start crashes that are frequent among older drivers. MLIT reports that the Toyota Alphard, rated with the Vellfire, scored full marks, 126 of 126 points. It won the grand prize for preventive safety. Toyota writes that the Alphard/Vellfire carries the latest Toyota Safety Sense, which detects pedestrians at night. Toshiba, which supplied the image processor in DENSO's front camera, credits its processing of luminance differences for better detection of pedestrians at night. MLIT warns that these devices assist the driver and may not work fully in some weather, surroundings or road conditions. No crash avoided on public roads is reported.

Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation. Toyota Alphard/Vellfire with Toshiba's Advanced Image Recognition Processor Wins Japan's Highest Award for Preventive Safety Performance. News release, 11 June 2019, archived copy. Toshiba supplies its Visconti 4 image recognition processor for DENSO's front camera in Toyota vehicles. It names the Alphard/Vellfire, Crown and Corolla Sport among the Toyota models that scored highest in fiscal 2018.
The LSI's ability to process luminance differences between objects and their backgrounds, realizing better detection of pedestrians at night and in low light conditions, helped the Toyota vehicles win high scores in assessment of collision avoidance braking for pedestrians.
