Fewer suicidal acts on the tracks at Stockholm stations with AI-CCTV

Researchers found that people hit by trains in suicidal acts fell from 1.17 to 0.50 a quarter at 14 Stockholm metro stations after SL installed AI-CCTV. Other stations saw no fall.

  • 4 for society

In the first year, people hit by trains in suicidal acts at the 14 stations fell from 1.17 to 0.50 a quarter, a population-level fall in serious harm.

  • 2 for an organization

The researchers found that canceled train-kilometers in the metro fell after installation, a measured gain for SL's service.

  • Not rated a person

SL logged 36 alarms that led to a person being safeguarded, and the study cannot say which of them would have ended in harm.

Depth runs from 1, a convenience or time saved, to 5, a life or a livelihood preserved.

An independent peer-reviewed study supports the benefit.

Compared with

The same 14 stations before October 2021, with the other 86 metro stations as controls. Measured.

Without the system
1.17 per quarter in the intervention group (55 in total)
With it
0.50 in the intervention group (2 in total)
The system’s part
The researchers compared the 14 stations with AI-CCTV with the 86 without it, before and after installation. The measured change belongs to the alarms together with the human response, since a safety officer reviewed every alarm. The study's appendix names the software as IRIS-SL by Irisity and describes a trained model that detects and tracks people. The Swedish Transport Administration funded the study, and SL supplied data.
Later
Nothing later is known. Over a longer period to mid-2025, which included media coverage and other measures, the researchers found that the controlled estimate was no longer statistically significant. Suicidal acts on the tracks fell across the whole metro from late 2022.

Implementation of AI-CCTV as described herein was associated with lower rates of PUT due to suicidality at metro stations, as well as changes in the same direction for e.g. deaths by suicide and less cancelled train-kilometers

Details

AI system

Workflow

The software scanned the feeds of existing platform cameras and raised an alarm when a person entered the track area or stood at the platform edge. A safety officer reviewed each alarm and passed elevated risks to a train traffic controller. The controller warned the train driver, cut the power and called emergency services.

Follow-up

Conditions for replication

Staff can slow or stop a train before it reaches the person. Cameras cover the platform near the track at enough resolution to detect a person.

Entry details

Sector

Public transport safety / suicide prevention.

Purpose

Irisity built IRIS-SL to scan station camera feeds and alert SL's safety officers when a person enters the track area or stands at the platform edge.
