An independent regulatory document supports the benefit.

The system’s part
Not isolated. The bureau confirmed that the device met the safety standards and gives no comparison with a human driver. The release describes sensors and cameras that locate the bus and the detection of vehicles and pedestrians. It does not say whether the device uses machine learning. TIER IV says that AI Pilot is built on the open-source Autoware software, and neither source shows that the system learns from data.

AI system

Workflow

The bus finds its own position with sensors and cameras and follows a set route. It detects surrounding vehicles and pedestrians while it drives. The bureau confirmed that the automated operation device met the safety standards and set its driving environment conditions.

Follow-up

Conditions for replication

The bus drives only on the approved route of about 1.2 km between Shiojiri Station and Shiojiri City Hall. It drives itself only under the specific conditions of the approval, at up to 35 km/h.
