Accords with forward collision warning drew fewer claims as they aged

HLDI found that 2013-15 Honda Accords with camera-based forward collision and lane departure warnings drew 10 to 13 percent fewer property damage liability claims at every vehicle age.

  • 5 for society

Insured 2013-15 Accords with the warnings had fewer property damage and bodily injury liability claims at every vehicle age, a change documented across a population of vehicles.

Depth runs from 1, a convenience or time saved, to 5, a life or a livelihood preserved.

Insured 2013-15 Accords of the same vehicle age without forward collision warning and lane departure warning. Measured.

The system’s part
HLDI compared Accords with and without the warnings and controlled for the LaneWatch blind spot monitor and for driver, vehicle and location factors. It could not tell whether the warnings were on in a crash and did not control for rear parking sensors. HLDI describes a camera system and does not show that it learns from data.

Workflow

A camera behind the windshield assessed the risk of a collision with traffic ahead and warned the driver with flashing lights and continuous beeping. The same camera identified lane markings and warned when the car drifted from its lane. The warnings were standard on some Accord trims and absent from others, so cars with and without them could be compared.

Follow-up

Conditions for replication

The car travels above 10 mph for the collision warning and between 40 and 90 mph for the lane departure warning. The driver leaves the warnings switched on, since each can be deactivated.

Sector
