What happened
Euro NCAP, the European New Car Assessment Programme, published its assisted driving grading for the Toyota bZ4X on 4 June 2025. It tested the highway assistance of Toyota Safety Sense, which combines adaptive cruise control, lane guidance and lane change assist. The system reads speed limits from maps and real time camera inputs and adapts its speed for curves ahead. The car avoided or mitigated a collision in most of the automatic cruise control scenarios and scored 35 of 40 points there. Through an S-bend, it stayed in its lane at all but the highest test speed. The car locks out the assistance after repeated hands-off warnings. With an unresponsive driver, it made a controlled stop in its lane. Euro NCAP scored the system 89% for safety backup and 83% for assistance competence and graded it Very Good. It noted that the indirect driver monitoring detects fatigue and does not detect distraction. No crash outcome on public roads is reported. Euro NCAP does not mention machine learning.

The system combined map-based speed limit information with real time camera inputs. It adapted its speed for curves ahead. It locked out the assistance after repeated hands-off warnings.
Follow-up
- Conditions for replication
-
The driver stays attentive, since the indirect driver monitoring does not detect distraction. The driver slows for junctions, since the system adapts its speed for curves only.
