What happened
Euro NCAP, the European New Car Assessment Programme, released its assisted driving grading for the Polestar 2 on 10 May 2022. It tested Pilot Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with lane guidance, on software version P1.8 or later. The car avoided a collision with moving vehicles in the adaptive cruise control tests. It failed to respond to stopped cars, and automatic emergency braking gave limited support when a crash was close. Polestar upgraded the steering support in late 2021. In the tests the car stayed centered in its lane through an S-bend at all but the lowest test speed. With an unresponsive driver, it made a controlled stop in its lane. The system cannot adapt speed for curves or junctions, and the car has no internal camera. Euro NCAP scored the system 88% for safety backup and 53% for assistance competence and graded it Good. No crash outcome on public roads is reported. Euro NCAP mentions camera inputs but does not mention machine learning.

Euro NCAP. Polestar 2 - Assisted Driving Datasheet 2022 (version 090522), May 2022. Version tested, software version P1.8 or later.
In case of an unresponsive driver, the Polestar performs a controlled stop in lane.

Software version P1.8 or later (software version tested)
- Workflow
-
The system combines map-based speed limit information with real time camera inputs. Polestar upgraded the steering support in late 2021. If the radar or camera is blocked, the car warns the driver and prevents activation.
Follow-up
- Conditions for replication
-
The driver watches for stopped cars, since the system did not respond to them in the tests. The driver sets the speed for curves and junctions, which the system cannot do. The driver keeps steering, since the car monitors the driver only through steering wheel input.
