Shield+ alerts cut conflict warnings on Gainesville campus buses

UF evaluators found that every type of Shield+ warning on seven Gainesville buses fell once drivers received alerts, by 34.17% on average. Drivers reported false alerts.

  • 2 an organization

Every type of warning fell after drivers began receiving alerts, by 34.17% on average for similar dates, a measured change in how the buses were driven.

  • Not rated society

The study counted warnings, and the report gives no crash figures for the test, so no gain in road safety is shown.

Depth runs from 1, a convenience or time saved, to 5, a life or a livelihood preserved.

Compared with

The same buses in stealth mode, when warnings were recorded without alerting drivers. Measured.

The system’s part
The same buses recorded warnings with alerts off and then on, so the change isolates the effect of the alerts. The comparison is before and after, and pedestrian exposure varied by semester. The report calls Shield+ a vision-based system with smart sensor cameras but does not describe machine learning.

Overall, data analysis results showed a reduction in transit bus and pedestrian-related conflicts with the installation of ADAS.

Details

AI system

Workflow

Two interior and two exterior smart sensor cameras watched the area around each bus. Three displays gave drivers visual and audible alerts. A telematics system logged the time and place of each warning.

Follow-up

Conditions for replication

Drivers are trained to know what each alert means. False and missed alerts stay rare enough for drivers to rely on the system.

Entry details

Sector

Road safety / transit buses.

Purpose

Mobileye built Shield+ to warn bus drivers of pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles that the bus might hit.
