What happened
Euro NCAP, the European New Car Assessment Programme, published its assisted driving grading for the Nissan Ariya in June 2023. It tested ProPILOT Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with lane guidance. The Ariya avoided a collision with moving vehicles in the adaptive cruise control tests. It also responded to stationary cars, and automatic emergency braking added support when a crash was close. Through an S-bend, the system kept the car fully within its lane only at the lowest test speed. With an unresponsive driver, the car made a controlled stop in its lane. Euro NCAP scored the system 86% for safety backup, 85% for driver engagement and 77% for assistance competence. It noted that the Ariya has no internal camera and monitors the driver only through steering input. The tests ran on test tracks, so no crash outcome on public roads is reported. Euro NCAP mentions camera and radar sensors but does not mention machine learning.

The Ariya avoids a collision with moving vehicles in the ACC test scenarios and responds also to stationary cars, with AEB interventions providing additional support in critical situations.
Details
AI system
- Workflow
-
The system combines map-based speed limit information with real time camera inputs. It balances the driver's steering input with lane guidance. If the radar or camera is blocked, the car warns the driver and prevents activation.
Follow-up
- Conditions for replication
-
The driver keeps steering, since the car monitors the driver only through steering wheel input. The driver slows for junctions, since the system adapts speed for curves and roundabouts only.
