What happened
Estyn, His Majesty's Inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales, published a thematic review of AI in schools in October 2025. The Welsh Government had requested it. Estyn surveyed over 300 practitioners and visited 21 schools chosen for their use of AI. Inspectors met leaders, teachers, support staff and pupils and reviewed documents. Leaders, administrative staff and other non-teaching staff regularly used ChatGPT and Copilot for routine tasks. These included drafting letters, standardizing communications and refining school policies. Staff told inspectors that this substantially reduced the time they spent on administrative tasks. One special school leader described senior staff using AI to summarize reports, which saved time. Estyn gives no measure of the time saved. It notes that including an example does not mean that it verified the practice for data protection compliance.
