What happened
Euro NCAP published its assisted driving results for the Mercedes-Benz E-Class on 25 October 2023. It tested an E400e with Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC on test tracks. The car scored 85% for assistance competence and 99% for safety backup. An internal camera checks for microsleep, and the car combines this with steering input to monitor the driver. In the adaptive cruise control tests, it avoided a collision in most scenarios and scored 36.8 of 40 points. It stayed in its lane through an S-bend at all test speeds. For an unresponsive driver, it moved to the slowest lane and made a controlled stop. If the radar or camera was blocked, it warned the driver and kept the system from switching on. Euro NCAP graded the system Very Good. The tests ran on tracks, so no crash outcome on public roads is reported. Euro NCAP does not say whether the camera software learns from data.

An internal camera checks for microsleep, and the car combines this with steering input. The car combines map-based speed limit information with real-time camera inputs. The system adapts speed for curves and junctions ahead.
Follow-up
- Conditions for replication
-
The radar and camera stay unblocked, since the car otherwise warns the driver and keeps the system off. The driver stays engaged while the car monitors the driver's state.
