What happened
Euro NCAP, the European New Car Assessment Programme, published its assisted driving results for the Mercedes-Benz C-Class on 23 October 2024. It tested a C300 Estate with Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC on test tracks. The car scored 85% for assistance competence and 97% for safety backup. In the adaptive cruise control tests, it avoided a collision in almost all scenarios and scored 38.3 of 40 points. It stayed in its lane through an S-bend at all test speeds. For an unresponsive driver, it moved to the slowest lane and made a controlled stop. If the radar or camera was blocked, it warned the driver and kept the system from switching on. The car checks that the driver's hands stay on the wheel. It does not use a camera to monitor the driver directly. Euro NCAP graded the system Very Good. The tests ran on tracks, so no crash outcome on public roads is reported. Euro NCAP does not mention AI or machine learning.

AI system
- Workflow
-
The car combines map-based speed limit information with real-time camera inputs. The system adapts speed for curves and junctions ahead. The car checks that the driver's hands stay on the steering wheel.
Follow-up
- Conditions for replication
-
The driver monitors the system's control of speed, braking and steering at all times. Poor weather, faded lane markings, construction zones or a tunnel exit can interrupt the support.
