What happened
Aimee Cox, Eric Teoh and Jessica Cicchino of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety studied Subaru's DriverFocus. It is a camera-based system that monitors drivers for distraction and drowsiness during normal driving. In September 2024 they ran an online survey of 3,475 US owners of Subaru models fitted with it. Of the owners, 87% said that they drove with it on most or every time. Among drivers who used it, 97% had received a distraction alert in the previous 30 days and 37% a drowsiness alert. Of these drivers, 64% agreed that it made them a safer driver and 63% that it helped them avoid distractions. Most owners (70%) would want the system again. Drivers reported some false alerts, and too many alerts and annoyance led 4% to turn it off. The Journal of Safety Research published the study in September 2026. The outcomes are owners' own reports, and the study measured no crashes.

Details
AI system
- Workflow
-
A cabin camera monitored drivers during normal driving and issued distraction and drowsiness alerts. Owners could switch the system off under their profile settings.
Follow-up
- Conditions for replication
-
Drivers must leave the system on for it to alert them. Drivers need to understand which behaviors trigger a distraction alert.

- Sector
-
Road vehicle driver monitoring.
- Purpose
-
Subaru built DriverFocus to detect distracted or drowsy drivers and alert them.
