What happened
ADAC, the German motoring club, published a comparison of the motorway systems of BMW and Mercedes-Benz on 3 November 2025. Its testers drove a BMW 5 Series on the Autobahn between Landsberg am Lech and Memmingen Airport in different weather. The section has several speed limits, a construction zone and a tunnel. Weekday traffic is heavy, with many trucks. With route guidance active, the car changed motorways, changed lanes and overtook slower vehicles on its own at up to 130 km/h. The driver could keep both hands off the wheel but had to confirm each lane change with a glance in the mirror. A camera checked that the driver was watching the road and demanded a takeover when the driver was not. ADAC found that the system worked reliably over long stretches, even in bad weather. It judged that the system brings no real gain in productivity because the driver must stay attentive. ADAC gave no counts of distance, disengagements or takeovers.

The BMW used cameras, radar sensors and navigation data. With route guidance active, the car changed motorways, changed lanes and overtook on its own at up to 130 km/h. A cabin camera checked that the driver's eyes were on the road, and each lane change needed a glance in the mirror to confirm it.
Follow-up
- Conditions for replication
-
The driver stays responsible and must keep watching the road. ADAC states that the tested Level 2+ and Level 3 systems may currently be used only on German motorways.
