BlueCruise and Super Cruise top Consumer Reports' assist ratings

Consumer Reports tested 17 driving assistance systems. Ford's BlueCruise scored 84 and GM's Super Cruise 75, the two highest, and both use infrared cameras to keep drivers watching the road.

  • Not rated a person

CR measured the systems in its own tests and reports no crash outcome for drivers or passengers.

Depth runs from 1, a convenience or time saved, to 5, a life or a livelihood preserved.

Status
Reported benefit.

An independent assessment report supports the benefit.

The system’s part
Not isolated. CR scored each system with its features switched on and compared the systems with each other, with no run without them. CR does not describe the AI in the camera monitoring or the lane centering or show that either learns from data.

The two ADA systems that CR rates highest, the Ford/Lincoln BlueCruise and General Motors' Super Cruise (Chevrolet/Cadillac/GMC), use direct driver monitoring systems (DDMS) that require drivers to keep their eyes on the road even while the systems are automating steering, acceleration, and braking.

Details

AI system

Workflow

Infrared cameras watched the driver's face and sounded an alert when the driver looked away. Adaptive cruise control and lane centering controlled speed and steering together. CR scored each system in 40 tests on its track and on public roads.

Follow-up

Conditions for replication

Drivers must keep watching the road and take back control when the system meets something that it cannot handle.

Entry details

Sector

Road vehicle crash avoidance.

Purpose

Ford and General Motors built BlueCruise and Super Cruise to steer, brake and accelerate on highways while cameras check that the driver watches the road.
