What happened
A 2023 law let French police and transport operators test algorithmic video analysis at the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games and other events. A statutory committee chaired by Christian Vigouroux evaluated the experiment and reported in January 2025. Its members included the heads of SNCF and RATP or their representatives. At SNCF stations in the Paris region, Wintics software flagged people entering forbidden zones to video operators. Over 56 days at six events, SNCF counted 660 true and 233 false intrusion alerts. The committee found that the tool let SNCF detect people on the tracks more regularly, preventing risks to people and equipment. During the Olympics SNCF made three interventions owed to the AI, all for intrusions. In one case police arrested a person whom an alert had flagged on the tracks at Gare du Nord. SNCF's abandoned-object alerts were 62% false. The committee found that interventions owed to the AI alone were extremely few.

The vendor trained the models before deployment, and they did not keep learning in use. Operators set the parameters for each camera during a calibration phase. Video operators checked each alert before any intervention.

The camera's view is well lit. Staff can reach the spot quickly after an alert. The station has too few agents to watch every zone.
