Dutch regulator approves FSD Supervised after road and track tests

After more than a year and a half of tests, the Dutch vehicle authority approved Tesla's FSD Supervised. It judged the system safer than other driving aids because it strictly monitors the driver.

  • Not rated a person

Owners in the Netherlands had not yet used the system when the RDW approved it, so the judgment rests on its tests.

  • Not rated society

The RDW expects a positive contribution to road safety but reports no crash figures.

Depth runs from 1, a convenience or time saved, to 5, a life or a livelihood preserved.

Other driving aids. Assumed without a measurement.

The system’s part
Not isolated. The RDW reports no comparison of driving with and without the system, so its part in road safety is not isolated. The RDW does not describe the AI or show that the system learns from data.

Later
Persisted, 17 June 2026. The RDW reported that almost 40,000 cars had driven about 24 million km with the system in the Netherlands without relevant incidents. It now calls the system at least as safe as other driving aids, where in April it had called it safer.

Workflow

The RDW examined and tested the system for more than a year and a half on its test track and on public roads. Sensors check that the driver's eyes are on the road and that the hands are free to take over the wheel. Inattentive drivers get warnings and can lose the use of the system after repeated lapses.

Follow-up

Conditions for replication

The driver stays responsible and keeps control at all times. The system is used properly, as a supplement to the driver.

Entry details

Sector

Road transport / driver assistance.

Purpose

Tesla built FSD Supervised to take over many driving tasks while the driver supervises and stays responsible.
