What happened
Healthy.io of Israel makes the Minuteful - kidney test for home use. The user scans a urine reagent strip on a color board with a smartphone, and an image recognition algorithm on a cloud server reads it. The result is the albumin-creatinine ratio, which helps assess kidney health. In a method comparison, 466 lay users aged 18 to 81 tested their own urine with an iPhone 11 or Google Pixel 3a. They included people with hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease and kidney disease. A trained operator, blinded to their results, then tested the same urine on the predicate device. FDA reviewers report that all 466 users completed the test with only the user manual and in-app guides. Their ACR results matched the predicate exactly in 92.7% of cases. FDA cleared the test on 6 July 2022. The summary does not say where users tested or whether the algorithm learned from data.
