What happened
Scopio Labs of Israel makes the X100, a digital microscope that images blood smears without immersion oil. Its Full Field PBS application uses artificial neural networks trained to sort white cells into classes for an examiner to accept or change. Examiners judge red-cell morphology themselves from an overview image. In a method comparison at three sites, 645 specimens, 310 of them from patients with disease, were read on the X100 and with a manual light microscope. Two examiners at each site evaluated randomly selected, blinded slides. FDA reviewers report that agreement on white-cell differentials was 96.29%, with 87.86% sensitivity and 97.62% specificity. The Deming regression results for the differential met the acceptance criteria. FDA cleared the device on 2 October 2020. The study measured agreement with manual microscopy and did not measure time saved.
