What happened
Researchers at Hohai University's College of Harbour, Coastal and Offshore Engineering tested Pangu-Weather on typhoons affecting Guangdong Province and Hainan Island. They paired its forecasts with a tracking algorithm for tropical cyclones to predict typhoon tracks. They then drove the SWAN wave model with these tracks and with winds improved by a direct correction method. They checked the computed wave heights against measured data. The authors report that Pangu-Weather could predict typhoon tracks far ahead, with results superior to those of ECMWF-HRES. They also report that Pangu-Weather underestimated typhoon winds. Combining its tracks with the corrected winds improved the accuracy of forecast wave heights. The Journal of Hohai University (Natural Sciences) published the article online on 28 May 2026. Only the English abstract was read, since the full text is in Chinese. The abstract names no typhoons and has no error figures.

The results indicate that Pangu-Weather can achieve long-term typhoon track prediction, and the results are superior to those of the high-resolution numerical atmospheric model (ECMWF-HRES), but Pangu-Weather underestimates the typhoon wind field.

- Workflow
-
A tracking algorithm for tropical cyclones extracted typhoon tracks from Pangu-Weather's forecasts. A direct correction method improved the forecast winds before they drove the SWAN wave model.
Follow-up
- Conditions for replication
-
Pangu-Weather's typhoon winds must be corrected before they drive a wave model. Measured wave heights are needed to check the forecasts.
