What happened
Amira is an AI reading tutor that listens as students read aloud, assesses their fluency and steps in when helpful. Evidence for ESSA rates Amira Moderate on two studies with 15,602 students. The clearinghouse belongs to the Center for Research and Reform in Education at Johns Hopkins University. The newer study matched 15,424 kindergarten and first-grade students in a large urban Texas district during the 2024-25 school year. Users outperformed matched controls on end-of-year DIBELS by effect sizes of +0.26 in kindergarten and +0.06 in first grade. Both results were statistically significant. The older study was a randomized trial of The Reading Tutor, Amira's predecessor, with 178 struggling readers in grades 1 to 4. Users scored higher than students in sustained silent reading, with an effect size of +0.64. The clearinghouse states that Amira's AI is trained on millions of voice samples from students. Amira Learning published the Texas study, which matched students without random assignment.
