What happened
Mexico's state-owned electricity company, the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), buys a managed detection and response service for itself and its subsidiaries and affiliates. Two Mexican firms supply it under a contract from 24 February 2021 to 31 December 2024. The supplier's staff operate the AIsaac tool from Eviden, part of Atos Group. Its threat analysis combines machine learning with human threat hunters. It can contain incidents that machine-learning algorithms find, even automatically. It also includes an event correlator that detects known threats with rules. CFE paid 107,525.0 thousand pesos for the service in 2022. In an audit concluded on 13 October 2023, the Auditoría Superior de la Federación reviewed the service for 2022. The auditors validated reports and graphs from the tool and found that AI correlation of events and real-time analysis had reduced risk events. They also found that the service gave CFE centralized monitoring of cybersecurity. The auditors give no number of risk events before or after. They found that CFE lacked procedures for forensic evidence and its chain of custody, and they issued a recommendation.
