What happened
UNDP developed iVerify through its Chief Digital Office and its Brussels-based Task Force on Electoral Assistance. UNDP's elections project in Sierra Leone brought the platform to the country for the 2023 elections. The project launched it with the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists, the Independent Radio Network and BBC Media Action. An evaluator commissioned by UNDP Sierra Leone reported in June 2024. The evaluator found that trained media professionals used iVerify to identify, monitor, fact-check and respond to misinformation, disinformation and hate speech during and after the elections. The iVerify team processed 265 fact-checking requests. These supported a fact-based public discourse during tense political competition around the elections. The evaluator does not mention artificial intelligence. UNDP's Independent Evaluation Office called iVerify an AI-powered tool in November 2023. In 2021 UNDP wrote that iVerify automatically runs articles from Facebook, Instagram and Reddit through Detoxify, an open-source algorithm that uses machine learning to detect hate speech. Neither source shows whether that screening ran in Sierra Leone.
